SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON ACADEMIC TEAM
SCIENCE OLYMPIAD STATE CHAMPIONS

The 2002-2003 team won first place and the Spirit Award at the SW Regional Science Olympiad and went on to win both awards at the Washington state tournament. This qualified them to participate in the National Science Olympiad at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Since then, the team has won the Spirit Award twice more and was a runner-up once.

The 2005-2006 team placed second at the National Science Decathlon in Monroe, WA.

SCIENCE TEAM
The Southwest Washington Academic Team (SWAT) was formed when a group of homeschooling families shared the desire to enhance their children’s learning experiences and interest in science. The team started in the fall of 1996 and their first year in competition was a year later.

Students meet together with parents (and siblings) once a week. They learn about a variety of science topics, become familiar with the different events and work with professionals in various fields of science. They choose the events they are interested in pursuing and spend time working on them. Much of their learning takes place at home, and they work together with other students during the weekly classes. While the main focus of the team is learning, there is an emphasis on developing character and teamwork.

In the spring, the team competes in Science Decathlon.
