THE HOMESCHOOLING SEMINAR
The Homeschooling Seminar is a class for homeschooling parents, both those who are already homeschooling and those who want to get started. The class sessions are held several times a year, but the reading and other activities are done at home. It meets the state requirements
for a course in home-based instruction for parents to qualify to homeschool, as outlined in Washington state laws.

SEMINAR TOPICS:
Topics covered include:
- Ages and stages of development (What to expect at each age)
- Socialization (The BIG question in homeschooling)
- Research on homeschooling (The success of homeschooling and figures to back it up)
- State laws (Washington's wonderful law and Oregon's, too)
- Philosophies & approaches
in home education (Why and how families homeschool)
- Family home management (Homeschooling is a lifestyle!)
- Role of
fathers in homeschooling (Helping dads be involved - taught by a dad!)
- Learning styles and children's gifts (Understanding who your child is and who you are)
- Getting started: setting goals,
selecting & planning curriculum, keeping records, etc.
- Teaching reading (Different methods for different types of readers)
- Testing
and assessment (Measuring the learning that is taking place)
- Homeschooling high schoolers (Yes, you CAN homeschool all the way through high school successfully!)
- and MORE!
There are four in-class sessions, two Friday nights and two Saturdays, with the reading, projects and activities completed at home.
The books
should be read prior to the class sessions, if possible. They are
available at public libraries and the Family Academy Bookstore. Additional reading
material and projects are included in the classroom sessions of the course.
